John Wertz focuses his practice on federal, state and local tax (SALT) planning, tax controversy and state tax legislative affairs.
John has vast experience in a variety of tax matters, having worked at major accounting firms, a national insurance agency, a major TV network and an AmLaw 50 law firm after he began his career at the Internal Revenue Service.
He has handled tax controversy matters at the federal, state and local levels. In addition, John has advised clients on all phases of state and local tax (corporate, individual, partnership and estate), as well as SALT transactional issues related to entity structure and formation, merger and acquisition due diligence, captive insurance companies and procurement of SALT tax insurance.
Prior to joining the firm, John was a tax attorney at a Big Four accounting firm, and served 15 years in management and tax counsel roles for a multinational mass media conglomerate with interests primarily in film and television. As part of the media industry trade association, John played a major role in a number of jurisdictions drafting sales factor sourcing legislation addressing content distribution revenue streams.
